Medicare and Aging
SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) is a program offering older Kansans an opportunity to talk with trained community volunteers about Medicare and other health insurance programs.
Trained counselors work with beneficiaries to assist them with their Medicare questions, enrollment and plan comparisons without bias toward any one plan or insurance company. The program also provides assistance with accessing prescription drugs at reduced costs.
Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to review their prescription drug plan annually using the free online Medicare Plan Finder. The next Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 - December 7. Free, unbiased, confidential assistance is available to help with this process. Appointments in
Geary County will be scheduled through the Extension Office.
What is Medicare?
Medicare is federal healthcare insurance for:
- People 65 and over
- People of any age with kidney failure/disease
- People who are permanently disabled and cannot work
Most people 65 and older enroll in Medicare insurance to help with preventive health care, in-home care, hospital stays, rehabilitation stays in nursing facilities, medical equipment and prescription drugs.
Medicare requires monthly premiums/payments deducted from social security and co-pays for various healthcare services.
